I don't believe this at all, there just isn't a need for it.
Really, it makes perfect sense. In a lot of cases, buying the classic games is cheaper than paying the $8-$10 for the Wii arcade games. It's the reason why I haven't purchased one online game since I got my Wii almost 2 years ago. I can go out and find the games for $4 or $5, and Nintendo doesn't see a dime of that money.

The average person isn't going into pawn shops to buy games instead of buying them on the Wii. Also it isn't cheaper to buy them at a pawn shop unless the ones that you shop at are a heck of a lot better than the ones here.

They must be, because it seems like I never spend more than $5 on loose, classic games I find in the wild.

I purchased my Wii on launch day here in the US and have had it 1 year 3 months.
Bad Enough Dude, you said you had your Wii for almost 2 years.
As far as Nintendo asking pawn shops to destroy games, I think not. What is in it for them?

Money. More sales on the Wii Virtual Console.

I think that came out wrong....I meant what is in it for the pawn shop owner. I understand that Nintendo may benefit from this if it were true but I don't believe it is and my original thought was what would the pawn owner get out of destroying games.
Sorry for the misunderstanding.

Usually in cases like this, the store would report what they destroyed and they would receive a credit in exchange for the lost merchandise. Obviously they can't make them do something like this and not offer them anything in return.

Seriously, this is the dumbest rumor I've heard this year for the following reasons.
1.All those old games require the old systems. As collectors, sure, we probly have them but for the general population, chances are they got rid of them years ago.
2.Pawn shops would report destroyed merchendise to who? Their supplier? Well, I highly doubt the person who sold them the cart only copy of mario/duck hunt would care if the pawn shop took a sledge hammer to it. They pawned it to the shop or browed money and couldnt pay on the loan hence it becoming property of the shop. If Nintendo somehow offered to pay them for each of their destroyed games, they'd go bankrupt because every single pawn shop would claim to destroy hundreds of games valued at thousands and they'd have no way of proving differently.
3.There is absolutly no great profit for Nintendo to do this as they've already made millions off of VC downloads without requiring anyone to get rid of anything.
4.Wii VC games start off at 500 points, not 8-10. I dare you to find a copy of Alien Soldier for $4-$5. Maybe you could also grab me a copy of Harvest Moon. Or Lords of Thunder. Maybe even Sin & Punishment even? If not, you could also try finding them for me for twice the price the points are charging even. If you can find me a cart only copy of S&P for $24, I'll give you $30 shipped right now.
5.Nintendo doesnt own the rights to every game released for their own systems let alone for all the games released on the other systems featured on the VC. Do you honestly believe Hudson, SNK, and Sega would agree to have their games destroyed because Nintendo saw the potential for personal gain? Think Konami, Capcom, SONY, EA, or any other 3rd party would give an OK to that either?
Now, call the following number and share this entire delightfull rumor with these folks please.

Since I started the thread, I will take it upon myself to try and confirm it's validity. I have sent an email to Nintendo customer care, and we'll go from there.

Nintendo can't fart in their sleep without it making breaking news all over the net. If this was legit, shouldn't someone have covered it by now?

I'd say it's a rumour and nothing more, otherwise I've just found a new career path if Nintendo will pay us to eliminate old stock.
