Jimi Hendrix, though he wasn't around long enough to suck.

excellent choice! he wasn't around long but the volume of work from that short time is enormous.

technically only there were only 3 "official" albums realeased during Hendrix's life time:

Are You Experienced?
Axis:Bold as Love
Electric Ladyland

there were a few other albums realeased during his lifetime that were sub standard recordings from his time as a sideman for Curtis Knight and the Squires. these were sold as Hendrix albums but he was really just a backup musician on them. when he hit big with the Jimi Hendrix Experience a small label released these albums. there was a lawsuit but they still came out because Hendrix failed to mention to his new label that he waqs still under contract as a sideman to another.

the live album "Band of Gypsy's" was another release made to satisfy a lawsuit.

any other Hendrix release was made posthumously. "Midlight Lightning", "Cry of Love" and SEVERAL others. while there is some excellent Hendrix material on these albums they were basically cobbled together from unfinished songs or new ideas Hendrix had not yet fleshed out. the studio re-mixed what they could and brought in session musicians to record missing bass or drum tracks. Mitch Mitchell, Jimi's drummer with the Experience did a lot of it. but as Hendrix was no longer for final mixing what you hear is really just a guess at what Hendrix's vision of the song may have been. Had he lived some may have never been released.
