I need a home networking EXPERT, please!

This is probably really simple, but I'm not great with networks.
We have ATT Uverse and the residential gateway they provide is not great. I'd rather use my Netgear WNDR 3700 Dual Band router. I've read that I can connect one of ports on my Netgear (NOT the WAN port) to a port on the ATT Gateway (again, NOT the WAN port), disable the wireless on the gateway, disable the firewall and DHCP server on the Netgear, and the Netgear will just act as a wireless access point/switch conencted to the gateway that provides the DCHP and internet functions.
Can someone please help me set it up because I know I have to set up the router/gateway ips and nets and subnets and DNS and I'm just not that confident. Thanks

Theoretically, yes, that's correct. You may have to change a setting on the Netgear to make it act as a bridge rather than a router, but it should work.
Check out this page for a little guidance:

If you have any trouble with DHCP, try switching all devices to static IPs. That worked better for me.
