 It would be nice if there was a variant identification section where the variations are pointed out.

anytime you see something in square brackets in the title of an entry then that's a variant...as i said in response to another post, the site is user submitted content so in some cases certain variants might be missing, but for most modern systems they've got it pretty well covered.

Variants are discovered more often then not by comparing images.
I've actually found a fair number of variants in the DB over the years. One person owns a game and submits the information off their box. Another person owns the game and submits scans of their box. Then i happen by and notice scans have different info than what is listed on the page. Do some searching around and find that there are in fact 2 (sometimes more) versions of that game.

There are actually quite a few variants for modern systems that are not tracked right now. Mostly it seems like they are "rebrandings"/minor art changes. Some of them are changes to reflect accolades earned or a new publisher, etc

Keep your eyes peeled Wink

As mentioned, variants are pointed out with the [] tags, and a small description is enclosed. With that being said, many times the descriptions are vague, and the submitter doesn't provide a description of the actual variant. If you see these and have a question, feel free to ask and we can add clarification if we know.

@izret,
There's an annoying variant in 2013/2014 where the ESRB logos changed. *mutter*

Besides that, there are a lot of store-specific variants that aren't in the database that I end up taking pictures of while I'm out and add when I get back. I've got a few more I still need to add, but it's starting to get crazy.
