Game with expansion a variation or original title? And Small Box vs Jewel Case.

I have "Return to Castle Wolfenstein: The Platinum Edition" on PC, it comes with the original game plus the Enemy Territory expansion pack. Should it be submitted as a new title because it's a compilation with more than just the original game or should I submit it as a variant of the main title?

Also for titling PC game package variations is it preferred to label the small jewel case sized boxes as "[Small Box]" or "[Jewel Case]"? They usually do have a jewel case in them & sometimes the part number on the disc will end in JC for jewel case.

staff can correct me if i'm wrong but if it's a jewel case only variation then i would put [Jewel Case] as the variation name. [Small Box] is typically used for the boxes that are just slightly wider and taller than a dvd case, like this:

Really, the first is Big Box, the second is Small Box, the 3rd is DVD Case, and the 5th is Jewel Case. The 4th is just a fancy Jewel Case, but unfortunately I don't really have a proper name for you on that one.

I've always used "Jewel Case Edition" for the 4th example.  Hard to be sure, but that is what makes the PC so much fun to catalog (not kidding).

i'm with shadow, i guess my crysis example would be considered dvd case too then, though it's not exactly a dvd case because it's wider than normal...and ya i don't know what you would call the 4th example either. maybe [Adventure Game of the Year] variation? that would set it apart from jewel case.

tech, it's still considered a DVD case. It's kind of weird, but that's the standard they went to with PC releases, mainly due to pack-ins like manuals. However, they're like the Double Jewel Cases for PS1, where each side had a disc... So, really, there's the "Double" DVD Case, "Normal" DVD Case, and "Slim" DVD Case like they had with the Xbox demos. As bomba said: PC, you crazy!

the only issue i have with that labelling is that the same style case size is used for CDs as well, with no difference to tell them apart besides the cover art. [edit: i do notice one difference and that's that the gap where you put your fingers to open the CD case is smaller than the two DVD cases, though i don't know if it's consistent across all CD releases.]

some comparisons below of the three different plastic "dvd" style cases you can find for PC, that i know of. Civ V is DVD, Operation Flashpoint is also DVD, and AoE III is CD. i'm not certain but i believe the "normal" size dvd case was actually DVD only, i think CD was phased out before those came in.

The problem with just calling it [Adventure Game of the Year] is that there was also a regular size boxed version of it with the same artwork and the Adventure Game of the Year label.

I submitted it as a variation of larger boxed version titled "Syberia[Adventure Game Of The Year Edition - Jewel Case]". But to me Jewel Case makes me think plastic not cardboard. I still wonder if small box would be a more accurate description (or maybe [smallerest box] ).


I agree that [DVD Case] is correct for the plastic cases. I think that even when they have CDs in them it's more saying that they are in the style of a DVD case than it is stating their content.

Actually I believe that style case is called a Digipak

Interesting find Schlibby but going by the pics those seem to actually hold the disc, the Syberia (as well as several others in my collection) box is just a little box with a standard jewel case in it.

Maybe [Boxed Jewel Case]? But really that would describe most PC games regardless of the boxes size & not all boxes like this have a jewel case in them.

Holy crap, that's the term I was looking for - Digipak.
Just remember guys - while the Variation Title is ideally exactly descriptive of the Variation, it just needs to be good enough for someone to know what it's referring to.
