The Atari 7800 was a system I had never even heard of until I started collecting.  I picked it up to play Nintendo's games on it, Mario Bros, Donkey Kong, etc.  I was fascinated by the novelty of playing Nintendo games on pre-NES systems.  But, as I picked up more 7800 games, I quickly grew to enjoy its style of 8-bit graphics and colors.  The 7800 has ambitious games mixed in amongst its ports, games like Ninja Golf and Scrapyard Dog.  It would never be an NES beater, or even a Master System beater, but if it could have had a few more years of releases, it could have been a really respectable platform to go back and collect for, a true unsung 8-bit hero.

Had the US market not crashed in '83, and had the 7800 been released around that time when it was originally slated to, it would have probably been stiff competition to Nintendo for a little while, and evened the playing field out a bit more.  I just got a 7800 recently, and it's a neat little system.

5. Sharp X68000

My first would have been a Speccy 128k, an upgrade but technically not a new system, so instead I will go with the X68000.  It has a lot of garbage, but what it does well sounds amazing, and that's what counts to me.

I saw the Super Cassette Vision at Magfest's computer museum.  Another 8-bit challenger to Nintendo's throne in Japan, I was drawn to the simple, colorful graphics of the system (which were helped by its ability to output in RGB).  However, since the only game I want to play on it is its Lupin the Third game, I've never pulled the trigger on owning one.

I considered buying one of these cheapo handhelds when I saw it in the back of Boys' Life.  Instead, I saved a little more money and bought a Game Boy, which had games I had heard of.  I would like to pick one of these up to see what I missed, but prices are too high for what is likely to be a lackluster experience.
