I've been on a constant quest for good thrash/speed metal for a long, long time now.  EARLY Metallica, particularly Kill 'Em All, is the kind of stuff I'm talking about.  Exodus is good, Mercyful Fate okay.  There are about two good songs by Blitzkrieg, but honestly most of their stuff sucks (and is impossible to find here anyway).

Finally while looking around on Napster I have found some stuff.  Knowing that Jason Newsted was in Flotsam and Jetsam before he joined Metallica, I have wanted to listen to their stuff for a long time.  I got to today and it is great stuff.  It's not on par with the brilliance of Kill Em All, but it's very very good if you like that kind of metal.  Since there's a lack of it, I was glad to find out that they are indeed good.

I also listened to an album by a band I had never heard of that was great: Overkill.  The album I listened to was "The Years of Decay."  Any album that has thrash metal tracks called "Skullcrusher" is automatically awesome.  I plan on listening to a lot more of their stuff since this was a great piece of work.

Anybody have any other suggestions?  Or am I the only one who loves 80's thrash metal?

All you need is Slayer. Reign in blood is one of the best albums ever. It puts anything metallica has made to shame. And as opposed to Metallica they still make good music today. God hates us all is a very good album overall as well.

a few other you may want to look into are Testament, Death Angel and Anthrax. Anthrax had a humorous side to them and did a few goofy songs and also dabbled in wrap doing a pretty cool cover of Bring the Noise. Some songs to check out are Indians, Among the Living and I am the Law.

Attack of the Killer B's will give you a good sampling of their stuff.

I was going to say Slayer and Anthrax. Also early Megadeth and maybe some DRI.

heh, what was I thinking?

some other 80's metal worth checking out, though maybe not thrash: Celtic Frost, Voi Vod, Kreator, Omen

and one definately not thrash but the greatest metal band ever: Iron Maiden - still rocking hard by the way.

If you want disturbing, go with GWAR.   They aren't thrash but they do have some disturbing lyrics.
