Its been a while since my last blog, but dont fret I've been hard at play. My internet connection at work has become very unreliable lately so my online time (aka blogging time) has been cut down considerably until we can solve our problem.

During that time I beat 4 more games and surprisingly enough I actually really enjoyed each of them. The first of this batch was The 3D Adventures of World Runner. And I have to say if you havnt played it definitely check it out. Its one of the most unique platforming games on the NES. It takes a back to front scrolling view as opposed to the very familiar side scrolling look. During the last 3 levels it can be a bit challenging, but the music is so freakin happy its nearly impossible to get frustrated. The bosses are all the same and very boring and repetitive, but the rest of the game is tons of fun straight through.

Had a second adventure after that one with my buddy Rad Gravity. Its a platformer with lots of puzzle elements tossed in. Each level has items that give you access to new areas on your map. So you've got to figure out what your new equipment does and where to use it to find yet more new equipment. Eventually you'll resurrect an alien bent on world universal destruction to fight with. It takes a lot longer than your typical platformer, but there are tons of secrets and enjoyable puzzles to keep you going.

Followed up my adventures with a nice little shmup called Twin Eagle. I had overlooked it because the box art kind of sucks, but it was still on the list of games yet to be completed over at nintendoage so I got around to it. Nothing to write home about, but it was solid. I like my shmups to be fairly plain and it definitely fit into that category. Kind of a step above something like Sky Shark, but waaaay behind something like Zanac. If love shumps I doubt Twin Eagle will do much for you, but if havnt played the really good ones yet it might hit the spot.

Lastly I was able to beat quite possibly the hardest game I've come across yet, Dragon's Lair. What made Dragon's Lair so challenging was one small part of the game, the final boss Singe. The rest of the game I really enjoyed and thought it felt as much like a traditional Dragon's Lair game as a platformer possibly could. Lots of memorization and following patterns like in the original, 5 lives to start you off like in the original, same story and some of the same characters as the original and pretty much EVERYTHING in the game will instantly kill you...... like in the original. Lots of the complaints I hear are about Dirk's sluggish controls. I think they played perfectly into the feel of the series though. With tighter controls the game would have played more like an action platformer. Because of the slowed down movements though you had to rely on memorization like in the other Dragon's Lair games. It felt right to me in every way, until I reached Singe. Everything moving at you during that fight is an instant kill and the speed of his attacks combined with Dirk's molasses-like movements made it nearly impossible. I said nearly. I ended up fighting him somewhere around 4 dozen times, by which time the rest of the game because increasingly easy, until I got a lucky round on him. By lucky I mean he shot a high puff of smoke every time a baby dragon appeared on screen during the fight. I find it incredibly difficult to kill the baby dragons when forced to jump the low puffs. He may have tried to give me a round like that much earlier, but I often made the mistake of jumping into a high puff because of the quick response time required to dodge them. Finally I was victorious though and I have to say, it was one of the most satisfying games I've beaten yet.

Posted under Contra, NES, Nintendo, World Record,

One of the games I remember most fondly from my childhood is Contra for the Nintendo Entertainment System.  One of the first great shooters on the NES, it's a game that is a must for anyone's collection.

A friend of mine was having trouble with his NES cutting off during the middle of game play and I suggested he purchase a 72 pin connector and offered to install it for him.  After completing minor surgery on his system the other night, I put in a copy of Contra to test it out.  I figured a full run would be long enough to ensure that the pins were install correctly and that my friend's issue with his system was corrected.  I consider myself a pretty good Contra player and typically never use the code unless playing with a friend (or on the rare occasion, my wife).  Anyway, I ran through the game with ease the first time and began a second run with 5 men.  I quickly finished the 2nd run and again, had more men than I started with (I estimate 8 or 9) and a score somewhere just over 1 million.

I started thinking.....how high does this game score and is it possible to roll it over?  Well, after a quick Google search, I discovered an article on a guy who scored 6,553,500 points.  Hmmm.... After two quick runs and what seemed to be no increase in difficulty, I thought that surely I could beat this score if I put the time in.  My next move was to take it to the source and check Twin Galaxies.  Wouldn't you know it, there are 15 other people with the same score.....  With the impossibility of 15 people reaching an endgame with the same score, I figure that the game's score is cut off at this amount.

Though disappointed, I figure why not still give it a shot.  Hopefully, I'll be posting this score soon, stay tuned.

Excuse the weird title. I was trying to pull a Crabmaster2000 and make a unique title out of what I've played. Heh. Anyway...

That game is Robot Block, better known as Stack-Up in the US. I recently acquired this ultra-rare title, and all I gotta say is this: "I don't get it". I've gotta say, I've played some...well, "different" games in my time, but this one takes the Trophy for Different. Even with a FAQ, I couldn't figure it out. None the less, what I have here is certainly unique. It even has some Voice Clips! So, yeah. Not much to say about this one.

As you can see, that's Disgaea 3: Absence of Detention for the PS Vita. This Strategy RPG is about a Demon Kid who is mad at his Dad for crushing his "Slaystation Portable" by accident. (Do I REALLY need to tell you where the name Slaystation comes from? I didn't think so.)

Anyway, the Demon Kid in question, Mao, is trying to kill his Dad for the injustice. Mao, (Voiced by the extremely talented Vic Mignogna, of DBZ "Broly" and DNAngel "Dark Mousy" fame) is a really immature and bratty kid with an EQ (Evil Quotient) of 1.8 Million. He attends a Demon School where things like skipping class are considered good, so he's an Honor Student.

The point is, this is one funny game, and if you like Strategy RPGs, you should seriously try this game. Don't have a Vita? There's a Version with less content for the PS3! Cheesy

That is the Xbox 360 Edition of Minecraft. Basically, it's a stripped down version of Minecraft for the PC, with updates from the PC Version coming to it slowly. Your probably thinking "Why should I play it then?". Well, there's no cheats or mods for one thing, so actually playing the game (It's better with a friend on the couch beside you. Yes, it has split screen Co-Op.) is rewarding. Plus, if your the kind of person who likes Achievements, this game is an easy way to get them.

Well, that's what I've been playing lately. Check back later for a new entry. Also, don't expect a new PGGS for a while. My sensors broke. Sorry about that.

Posted under Slenderman, PC, Scary, Frightening

Today I decided that I would finish Swords and Serpents (SaS), but when I finally sat down I realized that the grind of SaS had exhausted me and I needed a palette cleanser.  Plus I needed to kill some time until today's deals appear in the Steam Summer Sale.  On a whim I decided to turn to a recent free game I found called Slender.

At this point many of you (at lease those that follow Internet memes) know about the Slenderman.  For those that don't, the Slenderman  is a tall man dressed in a black suit, with little to no face, who stalks children.  The origin is a bit strange, as it has surfaced by the folks at Something Awful, who may have gotten it from the excellent PC Adventure Trilby's Notes created by Ben "Yahtzee" Croshaw, who may have been inspired by an old German legend.  Whew.  So at some point an Indie gaming company Hadley/Parsec Productions decided to create a small title around the urban legend, which finally brings us to the free Indie game, Slender.

Slender is a FPS game out to scare you.  It starts at night in the woods, with a flashlight illuminating a small section of trees.  The mission is simple: Find eight pieces of paper spread out throughout the game, each of which seems to be a disturbingly hand-drawn picture related to the Slenderman.  The game is open and free-roaming, and there is no visual arrow or blinking light to direct you to the next page.  Nonetheless, with only a few seconds of looking I found a path leading to the first page, which is attached to the back of a very ugly tree.  Following the path you come across the second page, which introduces you to both the Slenderman himself as well as the tension created by the developers of the game.  By simply looking at the Slenderman (whom you will only see motionless, arms outstretched towards you) the screen starts to go fuzzy, which gets worse the closer you are to the Slenderman (this will happen), where to counter you just point your character in a different direction, hold in the run button and haul it out of there.  Seeing him the first time put me on edge a bit, but the real scare happened later.

To be honest, I abstained from posting a video or pictures because I'm hoping that a few of you will download and play it.  The game is an Indie-style FPS concerned exclusively with atmosphere, not action.  It features quite a few options for the performance-conscious of us (options from "Fastest" to "Fabulous") so it should run on most computers made after 2007 (maybe earlier).  The game is only about twenty minutes in length, though the first few attempts likely won't last more than five minutes.

Slender is very brief, pretty, and small in download size (about 55MB).  For those that enjoy short and sharp gaming experiences and enjoy a good scare, I urge you to try the game.

EDIT:  The game's website is back up, so you can now download it from here.

Special thanks to Tomberry's original article  on Knowyourmeme.com.  Having just discovered the whole Slenderman thing myself this was an excellent resource.

This installment is back to basics, and I take a look at Harvest Moon A Wonderful Life, the PS2 version. Virtually all the charm that made the series fun to play has been zapped out of this game, but what specifics can be said about it?

Finally another update! I started Cthulhu Saves The World right away this Summer, but just finished it tonight. It has been my favorite of the four games I've completed. As a fan of both old school JRPG's and HP Lovecraft, it was pretty amazing to me. And funny! For instance, your first boss battle is against "four heroes" (I assume "of Light") whom are a little tough without early grinding. Later in the game you face them again and kill them in a single hit. Then there's all the great Lovecraftian references like visiting Innsmouth or battling Dagon. It's all so tongue-in-cheek both for fans of 8 (and 16)-bit RPG's and horror fans. The writing is seriously hilarious, and the gameplay is classic. I suggest this highly to... well... everyone here who has an affinity for retro gaming really. If you're into the macabre, then that's just icing on the cake. I've also unlocked some bonus modes that I can re-visit later as a plus.

Other Progress:

Daytona USA - I've gotten first in two out of three of the tracks. Fun stuff, though I'm terrible at racing games, so I'm playing on Easy to make it manageable for myself.

Grand Theft Auto: Vice City - I'm still stuck on the Riot mission, though I picked up the strategy guide at my local mom-n-pop store recently, so I can get back into it with some help.

It may not be the most popular sport around, but Volleyball was well known enough in the NES era to warrant 3 licensed titles on the system. Luckily each of these titles offers a drastically different take on the sport. Each game shines and stumbles in its own distinct areas.

After a slow last few weeks working on some time consuming titles I wanted to blast through a few shorter titles to help me feel productive. So I did just that!

Thought I'd finish up the last of the Volleyball games (licensed ones anyway) on the system. First on my list was Kings of the Beach. Plays like a more serious version of Super Spike V'ball. Tournament mode consisted of 15 matches of 2 on 2 volleyball to 15 set point games. Late in the game I figured out how to expoit the computer, but early on it seemed like each rival had a different weakness you could take advantage of. After figuring that out the game was a breeze and I was quickly crowned the King of the Beach!

To finish up my V'Ball trifecta I played the only traditional volleyball game and Black Box title, Volley Ball. This one plays with 6 players per side rather than 2 like the last 2 games. Seemed quite crowed at first and took a lot of getting used to. Spent several games getting slaughtered, but eventually figured out how to abuse the AI and won my 3 matches that resulted in a victory.

Some time ago I tried out Blue Brothers and was amazed at how it seemed to have nothing to do with its source material. As I got further into the game it seemed to have less and less to do with it too. Its a semi-puzzle platformer, which is normally a great combo in my books. But in the case of BB it wasnt great. I think the main issue was some tricky jumping combined with the fact that your character is utterly defenseless. You have to avoid nearly everything in the game or you'll take damage. Luckily its a short game so it was over in less than 20 minutes once I got the hang of it.

Lastly was Lode Runner. I used to play some version of it on a friend's PC years ago and remember it fondly so I was actually little excited to check out the NES version. It didnt disappoint. The game has built in stage select so its very easy to complete, but still a fun game none-the-less. There were a few levels that took a while for me to figure out, but for the most part its fairly straightforward. The video is pretty long, but its literally every second of me playing the game. Usually I restart my games after I fail and restart the recorder in order to cut down the time of the videos, but with the infinte chances and level select I just went with it. You can see my learning curve in its fullness with many many deaths early on and getting temporarily stuck on stage 6 before I find my footing and start running pretty smoothly through some levels.

BONUS GAME ALERT

Some of you might have seen my recent post in the Small Scores thread in which my buddy Duke.Togo graciously hooked me up with a beautiful copy of a new homegrew game - Assimilate.

Since this was my first homebrew I was pretty interested to see if it really felt like an NES game. Its was a pretty cool experience and I may expand on my experience with it in the future, but for now feel free to check out the entire game during my playthrough via the link below.

Since well before I decided to take on Romance of the Three Kingdoms I started playing the well known baseball game Bases Loaded. It never occured to me it would take as long or longer that the epic KOEI title to actually beat it though. Well if I would have read the manual a little better I would have known you have to win 80 games our of a 132 game season in order to declare victory.

I wont know which title I invested more time in until I get a chance to edit together the both of them, but right now my money is on Bases Loaded by a hair. It took me 85 games to win the Penant, but at least its done.

I meant to bring my newly aquired Assimilate cart along with me to try out after I finished Bases Loaded, but I mistakenly grabbed another new cart I had set next to it, The Addams Family Pugsleys Scavenger Hunt. Oh well why not give that one a go. After about an hour this very bland game was done. The entire game seemed to be absent of music. It was very odd and I'm curious to know if my opinion of "bland" would change at all if there was some tunage added to the experience.

A little while ago my wife and son went on a short visit down south to visit her mother. She does something like this a couple times a year when we can afford it and her days off align with the planets. Usually we have something around the house that needs to get done so I use that free time to try and fix an appliance or replace boards in our deck. This time though we were pretty up to date on our home maintenance so I had a lot of Nintendo time! So I decided to dive into a lengthy and legendary game while I had the chance.

Other than quick cart tests I've never spent much time on KOEI games from this era so I decided to make my first taste one of their most famous offerings on the system, Romance of the Three Kingdoms. My first couple attempts were miserable and I was getting frustrated. I posted a "help wanted" thread over at nintendoage hoping for some pointers. Luckily a couple of guys from my neighbourly Alberta were familiar with the game and were more than happy to help me out.

With a firm grasp on the basics I was finding the game A LOT more enjoyable. The scope of the game was still fairly large though as I not only had to defeat every enemy in every state, but I also had to conquer each of 58 states and have a loyal general occupy each territory. After many, many hours of harvesting rice and setting fire to my rivals fortresses I was finally victorious in my quest!

As some of you may know I just recently received a package in the mail from Duke.Togo. In said package was a game that he has been requesting I try for quite some time now, Gumshoe. Its been a little while since I've played a straight zapper game (I'm not counting Bayou Billy), so I popped it in tonight and gave it a whirl.

As far as zapper games and black box games go its quite good and very unique. Quirky little side scroller that involves you shooting the main character, Stevenson, a lot in order to get him bouncing around the screen to collect and avoid items and baddies repsectively. The goal is to gather 5 giant Diamonds from 4 different levels and deliver them to some sort of kidnapper in order to save your daughter. The final gem is protected by the only boss in the game Kulie in which you have to simply keep Stevenson alive long enough that he can take done Kulie with his newly acquired machine gun.

If your in the mood to zap one night check it out.

For my purposes, X-Men is beaten. I credit-fed through on co-op with my wife. But really, that's how I play beat-em-ups. Credit-feeding with my wife. We have a blast that way. I'm definitely still planning to try to get a 6-player co-op going though to get the full experience.

As far as my thoughts on the game: it was great. There's that certain golden age trilogy of Konami beat-em-ups with Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and The Simpsons. But y'know what? This one was really impressive. I love how unique each character is; I love how expressive the sprites were; I loved the cut-scenes; loved the levels; loved just about everything. I'm really glad I finally played this one and definitely plan to keep playing it. Though that boss-rush at the end combined with Magneto... I have no idea how anyone could beat this game on less than five dollars worth of credits!

It's been a bit, but lets check out what got beaten since last time!

Rage

Rage was that game that had no real driving plot, but kept you playing anyway. Like really, no driving plot whatsoever...and the ending is just as bad. The game rocked though!

Most annoyingly out of any of the other quirky features was the massive voice actor cast...so much so that i couldn't talk to anyone without knowing where I had heard their voice before. Also, Steve Blum, if you are reading this....stop stalking my games....and change your damn voice once and a freaking while.

The visuals were breathtaking, and the gameplay was spot on....so much so that I wanna make a foam wingstick model.

My only other gripe is the car customization...none of it really felt different, although for a tacked on mini game, i guess i cant expect much.

Borderlands

Me and the girlfriend were busy here...beating every quest in the main game...then the DLC went on sale so we bought em all and have most of that done. This was just pure fun....although i had bought the DLC with the bank a lot sooner... so many good guns lost to the 0's and 1's of history >.Pokemon Snap

A really fun game, when my N64 would cooperate. Hated the inverted controls, and was a bit too short.

But does anyone else see the Wii U as a perfect opportunity to make Snap 2???

Turtles in Time

This was one hell of an afternoon....playing all morning and not quite making it, then convincing the gf to put borderlands down for a day and to come help....blamo, 45 min later it was done. Almost like contra in the way that it's significantly easier with a second competent person at the helm (speaking of which, Super C is just waiting this same occurrence). Not much to complain about here either, except that it's more money than turtles arcade, but less fun.

Star Wars: Rebel Assault II

Lets preface by saying I LOVE SW:RA for Sega CD. That said, RA2 was a bit of a letdown. The controls were sluggish, even compared to the original, and although first and third person modes were there...it still diddnt capture that magic of the first. Part of the problem may be the storyline, which just couldnt get me into it...

so where does that leave me?

Dungeons & Dragons: Heroes
Max Payne 2: The Fall of Max Payne
Borderlands
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3
Castlevania: Lords of Shadow
Rage
Saints Row Diamond 2-Pack
Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter
Legend of Zelda, The: Ocarina of Time
Pokmon Snap
Legend of Zelda, The: The Wind Waker
Metroid Prime
Double Dragon II: The Revenge
Faxanadu
Super C
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles III: The Manhattan Project
Donkey Kong Country
Star Fox
Super Mario World
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles IV: Turtles in Time
Pikmin
Punch-Out!!
Contra: Hard Corps
Sonic & Knuckles
Legend of Dragoon, The
Star Wars: Rebel Assault II
Bully
Mercenaries: Playground of Destruction
Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater
Ace Combat 04 Shattered Skies

Lots of games done, still more to go!....I think a few games may get replaced due to lack of interest, or , since my family discovered the wii has netflix, console availability.

Till next time

The results are in for the record setting 2012 PAIN YOURSELF WITH SUBMISSIONS contest. This year's winner really went above and beyond the call of duty, but he wasn't alone at the top. There was a close second place contestant that truly gave him a run for his money. As usual, the winner focused heavily on image submissions, something of which we always appreciate greatly. 5,575 images were submitted by this member alone through the course of the contest. Along with the other submissions this person made, they earned a staggering 55,945 points. More than 2,000 more points than last year's winner!
This year's second place winner submitted a close second place point total of 39,152.

So you're probably what awesome members we have that would submit like mad men to achieve such greatness here at RFGeneration. So, without further ado, the 2012 PAIN YOURSELF WITH SUBMISSIONS Contest winner is .... Aeroc. This is Aeroc's third year in a row of winning the contest. So a big Congratulations goes out to him for this achievement. Everyone here at RFG appreciates your dedication.

So who was the valiant RFG soldier who fought so hard in his attempt to topple Aeroc this year? It was Crabmaster2000 of course. He made a solid attempt, but just came up short. I heard he's already healing his carpal tunnel scanner hand and preparing for next year's contest. Will he be able to topple the reigning three-time champion? Maybe it will be YOU who topples him, or will Aeroc continue his domination? Only time will tell.

So what does Aeroc win? Well, he wins the usual $60 of gaming swag of his choice and this sweet RFG Ringer-T:
Collectorcast

For the rest of you that attempted this great challenge, I know some of you fought hard and some of you didn't even realize you were competing. But I thank you for your work regardless of how many points you scored, every little bit really does help make the site better.

To round out the top 10 point gainers this year we have:
disloyalhead - 11,285 points
nupoile - 4,367 points
Tynstar - 3,980 points
Duke.Togo - 2,883 points
Sirgin - 2,854 points
raffa1985 - 2,138
Paully3433 - 1,937 points
blcklblskt - 1,874 points

Once again, I'd like to thank and congratulate everyone who participated this year. Without a solid community like you guys willing to submit like crazy we would never have been able to become THE Classic and Modern Video Games Database. But don't forget that you don't need to wait for the contest, we're happy to accept your submissions all year long!
