First off, a very special thanks to nupoile for sending me a Steam Code for ORION: Prelude. It's an amazing game, and a great time killer, and I highly recommend you buy it if you like Team-Based Shooters. Now then...

As I mentioned above, nupoile sent me a Steam Code for this game after I told him I was curious about it (I saw that he posted several screenshots of it on the Steam Community Page). Initially, I thought it was a Simulation Game, but it's actually a Team-Based FPS with RPG Elements. The basic idea is that your part of a team, and you have to shoot dinosaurs. Yes, dinosaurs. Big bad lizards. There's also a huge crocodile, but I digress. That being said, you shoot the dinosaur bastards, get credits (that's in-game currency), and upgrade your weapons and abilities between waves. This game is heavy on game modes, but I've only played Survival, a mode where you fight 10 waves of dinosaurs. In a way, it's like Left 4 Dead, in that there are a bunch of regular, commonly seen dinosaurs, and several unique dinosaurs, including but not limited to, a T-Rex and a Triceratops. Despite these huge creatures coming after you, I've found that on easier difficulty levels, you can easily bring them down with a few well placed Rocket Launcher shots. None the less, this is a great game wit lots of variety, and I had a ton of fun with it while waiting for Fallout 4 to release. That doesn't mean I'm done with it though, as I can see myself playing this a lot in the near future. Speaking of Fallout 4...

Fallout 4, the long awaited true sequel to Fallout 3 (and no, New Vegas is NOT officially Fallout 4, but it's still a great game), is a good game. In fact, it's a very good game. Of course, it's still a game from Bethesda, so before I continue, please note that bugs and glitches are present. If you buy this game based on my opinion, my advice to you is to save very often, and assume that anything can go wrong at anytime. Now then, this game is about your avatar, called the Sole Survivor, and they're search for they're kidnapped son. The plot starts out basic enough, but evolves quite tremendously by the halfway point. I'll spare you direct spoilers, and continue on about the gameplay though. This game is hard. Very hard. At first anyway...You'll quickly learn that you are literally powerless in the in-game world, called The Commonwealth. Only by moving cautiously, with intelligence, will you succeed. At first, you have no armor, and your only means of defense is a wimpy handgun. To survive in The Commonwealth, you NEED armor, and you NEED to fight smart. Running straight into combat, even on Very Easy, is a good way to die instantly. I learned this the hard way. Heh...In any case, once you start leveling up and finding armor, you'll have a lot more fun with the game, and find that you actually CAN run straight into a horde of enemies and survive. So why does all this matter? Is this not standard RPG fare? Perhaps, but it shocked me personally, since Fallout 3 and New Vegas actually were very easy. As for more gameplay aspects, I could go on for hours about this, but I think it's best you experience a lot of it for yourself. You be the judge. It just happens to be my opinion that this is a great game, and an excellent candidate for Game of the Year.

Okay, I think that covers it. Did I go on too much about Fallout 4? Let me know what you think. Once again, special thanks to nupoile for giving me the gift of dinosaur killing.

This may be the first game that lets me truly use the name of this review series. Persona 4 is a turn based RPG that was originally released late in the life of the Playstation 2. This game was developed and published by Atlus, and was released in the West in 2008. The game's commercial success, especially internationally, has lead to Atlus releasing an updated version with extra content on Sony's Playstation Vita, Persona 4: Golden. Spinoffs of this Shin Megami Tensei spinoff are all over the place now. Arc System Works developed the fighting games Persona 4: Arena and Persona 4 Arena: Ultimax for Japanese arcades, Playstation 3, and Xbox 360. The Vita recently saw the release of the newest spinoff, a rhythm game called Persona 4: Dancing All Night.

Hello everyone,

This is my first post and I hope that I get involved with everyone. I have been a gaming for many years and recently been collecting instead. The hunt for that game you always been eyeing since it came out has been my motivation, as well as, the games that I sold and/or traded-in. I collected whenever I first see an item, if boxed or loose, knowing that there will be a better deal down the line.

Feel free to drop in,
Julian

Image shamelessly linked from Game Oldies. Once again, I find myself in awe of late 80's,
early 90's box art. The cool fonts, the excellent, hand-drawn artwork,
and blatant overstatement of the actual product. Ah, nostalgia.

I love playing games.  I love video games, of course, because, if I didn't, writing this blog would be pretty silly of me, wouldn't it?  But I also love other kinds of games, because I grew up playing board games and card games with my family.  I can rock a game of Klondike Solitaire any time, and I rather enjoy trouncing my family in a rousing game of Scatergories.  Yes, I love a good tabletop game.  So do a lot of other people, I'd wager, which is why we see so many conversions of popular card, board, and other tabletop games onto video game systems.  The Game Boy was no exception to this, and received a number of relevant titles.

Radar Mission, on paper, is the very definition of taking a board game and turning into a video game with enough added content, feature/functionality, and substance, to make it worth playing over and above the source material it shamelessly copies.  In this case, it's the venerable classic Battleship.  Yes, the game that invented the catch phrase, "You sank my battleship!" that nearly every North American child in my generation could pull out of the air.  During almost any commercial break for after-school programming, or Saturday Morning Cartoons (RIP), a commercial for some iteration of the game was inevitably aired.  However, the difference with Battleship was that many versions of the game came with more than just plastic pegs, plastic ships, and a nice custom game board.  Some versions came with lights, sounds, and gripping nautical warfare action!  Okay, so maybe I'm channeling the commercials from memory, but the truth is, as a property to translate to the video game medium, Battleship had already transcended its pressed cardboard and plastic game piece brethren, and was therefore going to need more than just pictures on the screen and cutesy music to spruce it up.

Two years ago, we started Game Quest exclusively as a video game store. Now that we have the space, we've jumped into all sorts of other games. Many of these, like Magic and a lot of board games, I've played and am very comfortable with, but as we keep getting requests and bring in new products to try, I find myself exploring all sorts of new games, many of which have turned out to be a ton of fun!!

If you grew up in the 80's, at some point your dreams were probably plagued by images of at least one of the super iconic kings of the slasher film.  Though Freddy, Jason, Michael Myers, and even Leatherface were not totally absent from appearing on the home console, most of these games (if not all) were very poor representations of their movie license. Of course, this had a lot to do with early censorship issues, which prevented fantasy blood, gore, and other forms of more "adult" content. Thanks to ESRB ratings (established in 1994), parents can now be more aware of what their kids are playing, and on the flip side and much to the joy of many modern gamers, the amount of mature content has greatly increased in modern gaming.  Prior to ESRB ratings, many licensed horror games were "forced" to keep their games behind the counter or dull down the content for younger gamers. One of the most notorious (as in notoriously bad) games to come out pre-ESRB was Friday the 13th on the NES in 1989.  Since then, no one has even attempted to make a more violent and mature video game based on this series.......that is, until NOW!

Darkstalkers 3 is an tournament fighting game developed and published by Capcom during the company's Golden Age of two dimensional fighters. Only the Playstation port was released outside of Japan, and it made it to Europe in 1999.

Once upon a time, I convinced my mother to buy me an Atari Jaguar on clearance for sixty dollars at our local K-B Toys store. I had a nice stack of games with it including some of the 'good' ones like Alien Vs Predator and Checkered Flag. However, two games my sister and I played together for hours on end were Ruiner Pinball and Val d'Isere Skiing and Snowboarding. Ruiner Pinball is a pretty basic pinball game with some great sound effects. I remember Val d'Isere Skiing and Snowboarding to be a pretty good downhill skiing game, and for its time it may have been, but as it turns out, I must have had my nostalgia-colored glasses on.

So here we are again; another Halloween, another month to write a deliciously themed article.  Luckily this is a game-oriented site, else I would spin tales of true terror; of mortgages and debt, of teething and dirty laundry!  Of blistering noise and thunderous silence!  Of monkey's paws!  Of sump pumps!  Alas, I could not incur the wrath of my own conscience for such a deed, and must instead bring you a brief tale of stress and confusion.  You would call it Siren for the Sony PlayStation 2.

SOMA is easily one of the best gaming experiences I've had, and I cannot overstate how harrowing, thoughtful, and encompassing I found the narrative.  It is, of course, not perfect and not for everyone, but it comes with my personal highest recommendation.

If you want just the facts and none of the flavor, here goes;

SOMA is a first person narrative-driven game by Frictional Games, makers of the original Amnesia.  It's out on PC and PS4, download only, for around $30.  It has a hard, Sci-Fi theme with heavy psychological horror elements, and contains no combat, mild stealth gameplay, and a handful of fairly simple puzzles.  It's a pretty easy game to complete by design, especially for the genre.  There is thematic gore and (situationally appropriate) language.

SOMA is, by the end, more interested in the conversation it has with the player than it is about complex gameplay.  There is more direct involvement than say, a typical visual novel, and more gameplay than purposefully limited exploratory narratives like Dear Esther or Gone Home, but everything is streamlined to the point of interaction-for-the-sake-of-exploring and world-building.  It has obvious faults, including somewhat poorly implemented stealth and a jarring art style for character pictures and human models, which feel more like placeholders than artistic choices.  Some have complained about the voice acting, but I found it to be very well done.

If you have the means and ANY interest whatsoever, please stop now, get the game, and slowly ingest it, preferably with no lights and excellent headphones.  Take your time, as most of the story is in small bits scattered about.  Done?  Great.  Breathe.  Onward.

[MAJOR SPOILER TERRITORY FROM HERE ON, PLEASE ONLY READ IF YOU WILL NOT PLAY THE GAME OR HAVE ALREADY COMPLETED IT.  LAST WARNING.]

Posted under Nintendo64, RIP

Today is a sad day for me. My Launch-Day N64, which was literally bought for me on the day it launched, has finally met it's end. The shelf it was on collapsed for whatever reason, and I tried to power it on, to no avail.

It's not just the fact that it was a Launch-Day Console that upsets me, but the fact that it had a lot of sentimental value. It held tons of great memories for me, and it feels like a part of my childhood has been ripped away from me. Even when I replace it, it just won't feel the same playing a different one.

Some of my fonder memories include the day I upgraded from RF Video to Composite Video. The picture was clear, with absolutely no static, and at the time, it was the prettiest thing I'd ever seen in a game. Diddy Kong Racing was the game I was playing when I made the upgrade. The newly found bright colors nearly blinded me! Another fond memory is seeing the huge Star Fox 64 Box for the first time.

This event has seriously upset me, and as I don't have a steady job right now, I have no idea how I'm going to replace it. And I just upgraded my Everdrive 64 OS too!

Rest In Peace, My Launch-Day Nintendo 64. Your legend will never die!

Undertale

Metagaming is a series where I force myself to play through Metacritic's highest rated PC games, working my way down the list one game at a time. There's no real goal other than giving myself an excuse to experience these critically acclaimed games. Sometimes I'll beat the games, and sometimes the games will beat me.

I started playing Undertale a couple of weeks ago, when it miraculously dethroned Half-Life 2 as the #1 PC game on Metacritic with a beyond impressive score of 97%. I say beyond impressive not because the top games are actually a six-way tie with 96%, but rather because Undertale is a pretty small, indie game developed by one guy using Game Maker Studio. I'm not knocking such a thing, since the same can be said for Spelunky, one of the most perfect games released in the last decade. But I mean, look at these graphics! The overworld map feels like we're in a SNES game and then the battles shift to something out of an Apple II game. It's all so lo-fi that I'm amazed - maybe impressed - at such a universal acclaim.

And maybe that initial hype simmered a bit as well. In the weeks since I've started playing, Undertale has received further reviews and dropped "all the way down" to #13 with an average of 94% where I suspect it will most likely remain comfortably wedged between Grand Theft Auto: Vice City and Civilization II....still, not bad company to keep. Now before we go any further, I must warn you:  to talk about Undertale at all is to give away spoilers. So if you're planning on playing these soon and want to keep as many surprises as you can, I suggest you stop reading here. There are plenty of other good posts to read on these blogs.
